Game Highlights for 2011

September 26  -VS- Sermon on the Mound (1st Tournament Game)

Well we lost the toss, but opened well with 6 runs in the 1st. However, Sermon cut loose and scored 9. Not a good omen. 2nd & 3rd went quickly, and the 4th was a repeat of the 1st, with the score 15-21. At least half of their runs were our defensive errors. We made some of that back in the 5th, scoring 3 and making it 18-21, but Sermon rallied and won the game on run-rule at 18-28. How embarassing. Oh well, we'll get them next year!

September 19  -VS- House

They scored 26, and we didn't score enough. Kevin hit a long bomb and Jon hit one out. Matt had a great catch in the outfield. We did score a bunch in the 4th, but it wasn't enough, we got spanked 19-26 (Submitted by Scott).

September 12  -VS- Committed

We won the toss but got off to our normal slow start. We were down 8-0 before we came to bat. It was back and forth from there. They kept about this 8 run margin until the 5th inning when we exploded to tie the game at 17-17. They went ahead in the top of the 6th with 2 runs. Time was expired but we were the home team with an at bat to win. Well we didn't win it, but we did tie it to go to the 7th. We held them scoreless and it was our turn again. We just had to score one run to win. Jeffrey led off with a rocket liner that eluded the right fielder and he was off to the races. We thought he would stop at 3rd but he kept going toward home as the throw came to the plate. Their pitcher couldn't handle the short hopper and Jeffrey was safe with the winning inside-the-park home run. Jeffrey was so excited that he had drinks for everyone after the game. August 29  -VS-   Calvary Nazarene

Terrible start, down 13-1 after three innings.  We battled back, scored 6 runs all with two outs, in the last inning to take a one run lead, then gave up two runs in the bottom of the inning to lose 19-20.

August 22  -VS-   Christ Community

We hadn't played in 3 weeks, and it showed.  Christ Community was 1-3 in their season but played quite well.  We traded the lead for 5 innings, helped by Matt's two home runs (the 2nd HR went half way to Maiden Lane).   Finally with time expired in the 6th, Scott gave a spirited pep talk and it worked.  With 2 outs, Andrew stepped in as pinch runner for Kevin, rounded 3rd on an overthrow, and pulled in the winning run for a 21-20 win.

August 1  -VS-   Sermon on the Mound

Great game, lots of action.  Sermon has quite a good team, but they had many errors that night.  We won the toss, but they jumped ahead 2-0 in the first.  We woke up and scored the first of our two 8-run innings.  Sermon battled back with lots of clean singles, two off the fence, and two over the fence.  Matt shot a 3-run homer in the 6th to make the score 18-17.  We shut them down in the 7th, and ran the clock out to finalize the 23-17 win.

July 25th  -VS-   Forest Park

We were visitors and scored 2 in the 1st with 3 left on while Forest Park was asleep.  Their defense woke up and we went down 1-2-3 in the 2nd and 3rd, and 1-2 in the 4th (8 up, 8 down).  We did score 6 on 2 outs in the 4th, and FP managed 4 in the bottom of the 4th.  Their offense turned sour and our outfield defense turned up a notch as we scored 7 more in the 6th & 7th, and they scored a single-run HR to make the final score 16-5.

July 18th  -VS-   College Heights

We hit the ball alright in the first inning and got out to a 3-0 lead after one inning.  They then hit the ball really well in the second scoring nine of their 12 runs.  Stuart, who pitched for Roger since he had a Parish Council meeting, shut them down the rest of the game and only gave up three runs over the last five innings.  Our bats just didn't come through in big situations, and we managed only seven runs for the game, and a 12-7 loss. July 11th  -VS-   Christian Canucks
New season, new teams: the Canucks are very young and inexperienced, but boy can they run!  And we sure didn't start out well, leaving the score 4-2 after the 1st. We worked out the kinks in the 2nd and 3rd, and
our bats continued to hit solid singles, which were turned into doubles, triples and even several error aided inside-the-park home runs.  The game was eventually called due to the run rule with St. Mary's coming out on top 21-6. (from Scott)

June 27th -VS- Forest Park, tournament game for 3rd place:

We got off to another great start and jumped out to a lead of 5-0 after the first inning, but then Forest Park had a big inning, and we led 10-8 after three innings.  A little back and forth and we found ourselves down by two runs as we came to bat for the final half inning.  A single and two walks loaded the bases with zero outs and Stu up to bat.  He singled in the first run and the bases were still loaded.  Andrew then hit a sacrifice fly to the outfield to score Steve to tie the game.  Roger and Stu both moved up behind the play, with Stu making a brilliant play by trying to go to third while Roger was still there.  It completely confused Forest Park, and they threw back to second to try to get Stu after he started going back.  Roger immediately took off for an uncovered home plate and scored the winning run.  As a result we won a third place trophy with a 15-14 win.

June 20th -VS- Immanuel Lutheran

We pulled ahead 7-3 in the 1st and stayed ahead the whole game.  They used their 2 HR in the 3rd bringing in 7 runs, but Jeremy went yard on a 3 run homer to keep us ahead with a 19-11 win.  Congratulations Jeremy - his first HR ever.  We gave him the signed game ball.

June 20th - VS - 1st Baptist (House)

It started out OK, with a no-hitter thru 1.5 innings.  Then House cut loose with a 10-run 2nd inning, including 2 HR.  We battled bad infield hops all night, and Kendall pulled in a 3-run inside-the-park HR to help, but it wasn't enough, and we lost on run-rule.

June 13th - VS - 1st Baptist (House)

Not real pretty.  We led 3-2 in the first, but then both ends of the House lineup started hammering the ball, and never let up.  Defense was pretty tight, and Kevin popped another one over, but it just wasn't enough and we ended up with a 6-17 loss.

June 6th - VS - Calvary Nazarene (again)

Not as bad as the May 16th game.  We actually jumped out ahead 5-2 in the first inning, which was shortened to 4-2 as the scorekeep redid her math.  Calvary then proceeded to hit hit hit with zero defensive errors.  We did OK, Kevin popped a 2-run HR, and the bottom of the lineup did respectably, but a few errors crept in.  In the end, we just couldn't add up the runs even in our Home team last at bat, and ended up losing 11-17.  The Nazarenes prayed for St. Mary's church after the handshake.

Our next game was previously scheduled for Monday May 23rd.

It Never Happened...

Sunday May 22nd 5 PM - Disaster struck!

The most destructive single tornado in history.  30% of Joplin demolished.

Photos and TV spots cannot convey the carnage and destruction.

It is now almost 2 weeks since that fateful day.

We mourn our lost ones, we pick ourselves up, and Life goes on.

May 16th - VS - Calvary Nazarene

Ugly from the start.  They hit the ball well all night and jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the first inning.  We struggled at the plate, and they didn't.  Run after run crossed the plate inning after inning.  The game was eventually called due to run rule after the fifth inning with us on the losing end of a 22-8 score.  We get another chance at them again next week, it can't go much worse.  (from Scott)

May 9th Double Header - VS - Forest Park

Pete won the toss for Home team, but it didn't help much.  It also didn't help we had many players absent and Roger played sick.  We should have won this game, but it was not to be.  3 HRs that never went over the fence due to wind sure didn't help.  Many errors in the 5th, plus they cut loose in the 6th, resulted in a Loss 10-20.

May 9th Double Header - VS - Immanuel Lutheran

Pete again won the toss, and we batted good sticks in the 1st to pull ahead.  Defensive errors crept in the 2nd, but we traded runs thru the 4th making it 10-6.  Each team added 3 in the 5th to make it 13-9, and Immanuel only pulled in 2 in the top of the 6th, for a final Win 13-11.

April 18  - VS -  Immanuel Lutheran

We lost the toss, but even as Visitors we were ahead from the 1st.  We kept the lead, although narrowly, the whole game, and the score was 10-7 after 3rd.  The 4th inning looked bad for us, with 3 of our 7 Defensive errors, but we recovered.  Two HR finished off the game with a 14-11 win.

April 18  - VS -  Forest Park

I can't believe we lost this game.  We pulled ahead early and stayed ahead... all except for the last inning.  There were few errors compared to the earlier game, but since we were visitors again, Forest Park's late rally in the bottom of the 7th finished us off with a 11-12 loss.

April 11  - VS -  1st Baptist W.C. (House)

Things were close early on, but then we had one bad inning with several errors and hit after hit by the House, which led to most of their runs.  We tried to make a little bit of a comeback, but fell short.  It was pretty obvious this was the first game of the season, there just was not a lot of fluidity to the team.  (from Scott)
